Bexley 13 Footscray 5
Bexley got their first points on the board this season in a scrappy game against a willing Footscray team on Vice Presidents day. The game was marred by a gusty wind which made kicking difficult so it was a huge bonus when captain and fly half Keith Rutter kicked a penalty mid way through the first half to give Bexley a 3-0 lead. Neither side managed to get moves going in the blustery conditions and the score remained 3-0 at half time.
Bexley came out fired up in the second half and some determined forward play saw Dave Silvester crash over for the first try to make it 8-0. In the swirling wind Mark Goulters line out throwing was first class throughout the game finding both jumpers. The Bexley pack decided to play a close game and from a rolling maul set up the games second try scored by Jim Peerless. There were two blemishes to the performance, firstly the loss of No 8 Lee Wells with a hamstring injury after Bexley’s only substitute was used and the second was a try for Footscray scored in the corner by their right winger at the very death.
But a win is a win and this must be used to build on for the coming weeks.
Man of the match: Jim Peerless for his tireless work in all areas, capped with a try. Run very close by Mark Goulter who had a good game.
